Resident Evil 6 Preview
Currently in full development for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC platforms, Capcom is hard at work realizing Resident Evil 6; their most ambitious project to date. The development team is aiming to give players just the perfect blend of the modern action gameplay and cinematic set pieces with horrific imagery and bleak situations that the classic Resident Evil games were synonymous with.
Set 10 years after the events that destroyed Raccoon City, Resident Evil 6 will star a number of protagonists led by series stalwarts Leon Kennedy and Chris Redfield. Leon’s story is set in the fictional city of Tall Oaks. Because of his heroic actions in the past as well as his close personal relationship with the president of the United States, Leon has since become a more prominent anti-bioterrorism agent and has made it his life’s mission to rid the world of bioterrorism.
As Leon is to meet with the president, the location gets hit by a bioterrorist attack. The entire city is decimated and overrun by zombies (that’s right, zombies are back!). Unfortunately for Leon, the president of the United States (his most trusted ally) has been killed, and now it’s up to Leon and his partner, government agent Helena Harper to survive and learn the secrets of the new infection.
Chris’ story is set in the fictional coastal town called Lanshiang, China where he and his squad of Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA) soldiers battle through the city threatened by bioterrorist attacks. The town is now plagued by morphed majini-like monsters rampaging through the city. With no country safe from these attacks and the ensuing outbreaks, the entire world’s population is united by a common fear that there is no hope left.
And finally, a third-yet unnamed character will join the mix, where he is partnered up with Resident Evil 4′s Ashley Graham. All we know is that this as-of-yet unnamed man is a mercenary currently engaged in a bloody conflict in Eastern Europe where reports confirm that B.O.W.s are increasingly being used by bioterrorist and other evildoers. One day, he’s told that he is the man to save the world. Whilst he doesn’t understand the implications of this, being a mercenary, he does immediately think how much money he can make from it.
It seems his blood is very important and might spell the end for the infections; thus making him a key player in the Resident Evil universe. Joining him are other characters that bring their own unique perspective to the overall Resident Evil universe, bringing the threat of bioterrorism onto a global scale.
From what we’ve seen, it seems like Leon’s campaign is a return to the survival-horror roots of the series. With darker environments, scarier enemies, and a more deliberate pace. It’s been something RE fans have been asking from Capcom for some time now. On the other hand, Chris’ campaign seems more like a cross between the action-horror of Resident Evil 5 and the stop-and-pop gameplay found in Gears of War. There are more shootouts (Chris with his marine team) against multiple enemies and monsters, and heart-stopping set pieces like the ones found in RE5.
Capcom has confirmed that Resident Evil 6 will feature an evolved control system allowing players to shoot while on move;a first in the main RE campaign, slide; roll in any direction and to take cover along with the addition of an enhanced melee attack like the ones found in RE4 and RE5.
Hiroyuki Kobayashi, Resident Evil 6 Executive Producer added: “From the outset the team’s intention was to create an experience that delivers a gripping storyline, tense single-player and co-op action all set against a constant theme of horror. We are calling this fusion dramatic horror and are confident it will resonate with both existing fans of the series as well as newcomers.”
“Resident Evil 6 represents a giant stride forward in the evolution of the series,” commented Katsuhiko Ichii, Head of R&D and Global Marketing. “The development team, led by Hiroyuki Kobayashi, is working tirelessly to deliver the most impressive Resident Evil title ever both in terms of scope and production values. We are all genuinely excited by the title and cannot wait to share it with the world.”
Capcom has said that Resident Evil 6 will come to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 20, 2012.
