Base-Building Returns In Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes

Speaking with Eurogamer, Hideo Kojima confirmed that base-building returns in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and that they (Kojima Productions) are planning on creating ways that can allow players to access the feature from outside the game using devices like phones and tablets.

Kojima himself has admitted that gamers not only interact with their favorite games using their consoles anymore; and that they’re planning on players being able to build their bases, using their own devices.

“Furthermore, nowadays there are various ways to access the game world – you’re not just playing in your living room on your games console… You may also access through your cell phone and other devices and still access that same game. I think in that respect that motherbase system lends itself very well to that system, and that’s something we’re planning on for Ground Zeroes.”

Hit the jump to find out more about base-building in Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes.

Big Boss steps into the open-world. With day/night cycles and fantastic lighting.

It’s nothing really new, being able to access the game world using outside devices like smart phones and such. Many modern games have players accessing things like databases/in-game emails (Mass Effect 3/Datapad), game lore and books (Dragon’s Dogma/Compendium of Wisdom), and even stats, DLC, and clans (Call of Duty/Elite App).

However, it looks like Kojima Productions is looking to go above and beyond with their own potential app. If you know or have played Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, the motherbase system is quite in-depth and could even function as a separate game. Imagine being able to do all that outside of the open-world of Ground Zeroes. That opens up a wealth of possibilities.

One of the most addictive features from Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, base-building allowed Big Boss to recruit soldiers, develop weapons and equipment, as well as build the monstrous Metal Gear Zeke. Not only that, players were able to send fighting squads made up of their recruited soldiers and vehicles into simulated skirmishes that could have been another separate game in itself.

MGS: Peace Walker’s Motherbase; Ground Zeroes could look like this, only players can move freely on foot.

So not only is Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes open-world with full day/night cycles, it’ll also have a base-building mini-game that will allow players to explore their base (on foot as compared to the overhead view in Peace Walker) and travel from base-to-battlefield using the MSF’s helicopters.

This game is sounding more and more attractive everytime new details pop up. We’ll keep you guys updated as we learn more of MGS: Ground Zeroes.
