Fans of Far Cry 3 rejoice! According to IGN and an Xbox.com listing, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is indeed coming to XBLA, PSN, and PC as a standalone game. That means you don’t need to own a copy of Far Cry 3 to play Blood Dragon.

Now, I loved the origninal Far Cry 3 (check out our review) for it’s open-world, satisfying combat, excellent story, and memorable characters. It looks like Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon will be going with what worked with the original; but instead of a brutally realistic story that dealt with the darkest corners of human psyche, Blood Dragon will instead take a page from the 80’s school of action.

Use a gatling gun to fight cyborgs, vehicles, and Dragons? Yes please!

So, what did the “future” look like in the 80’s?

  • Neon-drenched labs and locations
  • Cyborg attachments and cyborg nations (Cyborg Cop)
  • Evil Mutant gangs (remember Toxic Avenger?)
  • Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss and more 80’s Sci-fi classics)

In addition to the 1980’s cliches, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon will feature an old-school arcade/retro game look and feel. For example, it’ll have that CRT TV look complete with flicker, scanlines, and of course the neon-drenched colour-filters. Seriously, if you’re a fan of old-school action movies where the heroes like Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Willis, Lundgren killed hundreds of bad guys in the hundreds (within the film’s running time), then you should look forward to Blood Dragon.

Plus you get to use a gatling gun to fight against DRAGONS! Is there anything cooler than that? I think not.

Here’s the Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon description from Ubisoft:

Far Cry® 3 Blood Dragon is THE Kick-Ass Cyber Shooter taking place on a bizarre open-world island crawling with evil. Welcome to an 80’s VHS vision of the future. The year is 2007 and you are Sargent Rex Colt, a Mark IV Cyber Commando who’s fighting against a cyborg army gone rogue. Your mission: get the girl, kill the baddies, and save the world. Experience every cliché of a VHS era vision of a nuclear future, where cyborgs, blood dragons, mutants, and Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens, Navy Seals) collide. Playing Far Cry® 3 Blood Dragon doesn’t require a copy of Far Cry® 3.

According to Xbox.com, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is set to release on May 1, 2013 but it looks like that’s not a definite release date. We’ll keep you updated once Ubisoft confirms the release window. In the meantime, check out these rad screens!

  1. Predictions: No game will ever make me as happy as this DLC will.

    • I know right Brooke? We loved Far Cry 3 and Blood Dragon looks like it’ll be a hoot if nothing else. Plus any game that lets me use a Gatling Gun against a dragon gets a thumbs up in my book.

  2. I wonder what type of price tag the game will carry.

    • You can actually pre-purchase the game on Steam now for $14.99. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon should be around the same price for both PSN and XBLA when it releases next month!

I don’t know about you, but I’ve seen the 15-min intro + gameplay and am super excited to play it. Even the training level is hilarious!
