NAMCO BANDAI To Open Vancouver Game Studio This June
Industry hopefuls will be happy to know that one of Japan’s leading publishers, NAMCO BANDAI is set to open a Vancouver game studio this June. The new studio will open with 30 staffers and will work closely with government and local colleges and universities to acquire new talent and hopefully help bolster BC’s video game industry.
More information on NAMCO BANDAI’s Vancouver branch after the break.
Given recent studio closings and layoffs throughout game studios in Vancouver, it was quite a surprise to find out that NAMCO BANDAI will be opening a studio (that’s going to focus on creating online social games) in the city. However, at closer look, it actually makes sense since the studio will be located inside The Centre for Digital Media, a school that’s focused on training professionals in digital media.
Hajime Nakatani, the CEO, NAMCO BANDAI Studios Inc. had this to say about working with the BC Government to set up the Vancouver studio:
“As we build our global development network, we are very honoured and excited to have found Canada as our partner. British Columbia has demonstrated a deep understanding of the digital media and game industries, especially in Vancouver, which has a long history as a pioneer in game development. This makes it a perfect choice for our first step forward in establishing our global network. I am confident that we will be able to achieve new and amazing feats in Canada, thanks to its great talent pool, leading edge academic and research institutions and pro-business federal and provincial governments.”
There’s no word on which NAMCO BANDAI’s established IP’s the Vancouver branch will handle, or if they’ll work on brand new IP’s but we’ll keep you guys updated as more information becomes available.
