[Victoria, BC] Gotta what? Gottacon Pre-Registration is Open for 2014!

Gottacon Logo

Practically five years in the making, Gottacon is making the leap to become a fully realized convention for gamers and the public alike. This event will now take place at the Victoria Conference Center, running from February 28th to March 2 and pre-registration is open.

This event is for the gamer in us all. People can sign up to play in cards tournaments like Magic the Gathering, miniature battles with Game Workshop’s Warhammer or video games à la Starcraft. The fees pay for the rental of the hall space and prizes. But there are free games to try out too. Whether that is with board games like CLUE, role-playing in the fantastic realms of Dungeons and Dragons, this show has it all. This news is particularly exciting for the local gaming community and this author has seen this event grow from its humble beginnings (behind the scenes and in front of) by simply catering to the dedicated gamer crowd than to make it a side-show attraction.

Evoland Review – A Love Song To Zelda And Friends

The magic of discovery is an extremely hard thing to capture, and an even harder thing to write about. If the whole charisma of a game is wrapped up in the discovery of the game itself, how do you write a review about said game without spoiling it? Such is my dilemma with the excellent Evoland, by indie studio Shiro Games.

Find out if I figure out how to do so after the break. Read the rest of this entry

Divinity: Original Sin Kickstarter Starts – And It’s Already at $145,000

Larian Studios, the developers of the Divinity titles for PC and Xbox 360 recently launched the Kickstarter campaign for their upcoming Divinity: Original Sin. The Kickstarter campaign for this open-world, turn-based RPG just started two days ago, and it’s already amassed $145,000 of its $400,000 goal. A wonderful campaign start for such a storied franchise.

What’s great about Divinity: Original Sin is that a) it’s an open-world RPG, b) it’s got both singleplayer and coop multiplayer gameplay, and c) your actions, choices, and decisions actually have repercussions and consequences that affect not just you but the game world itself. More on Divinity: Original Sin and its Kickstarter campaign after the break. Read the rest of this entry

Final Fantasy: All The Bravest Launches on iOS Devices

Square-Enix announced earlier today that their newest mobile RPG titled Final Fantasy: All The Bravest has launched on iOS devices. Unlike many of Square-Enix’s premium-priced RPG’s on iOS though, Final Fantasy: All The Bravest is a unique action-RPG that’s priced at $3.99. (Quite a steal if you ask me since Square-Enix mobile titles are pretty meaty, considering)

So what separates Final Fantasy All The Bravest from other mobile RPG’s? Find out after the break. Read the rest of this entry

Role Playing on the Road – Dungeon Village

In this week’s installment of Role-Playing on the Road, I’m going to touch on a compelling, but unfortunately shallow mobile RPG experience:

Dungeon Village (played on Android)

This is the first RPG effort from Kairosoft, the minds behind Mega Mall Story and, most notably, Game Dev Story. (Dungeon Village was originally and unsurprisingly titled RPG Story.) Like most Kairosoft games, Dungeon Village follows a number of cute sprites as they perform their day-to-day activities, and it’s up to the player to give them the resources to make them happy and productive. Unlike other Kairosoft games, this one introduces traditional RPG elements such as battles, quests, and item creation.

First Thoughts: Mass Effect 3

EA and Bioware’s Mass Effect 3 signals the glorious end for the successful RPG/Squad-Shooter hybrid franchise. The third game has a grim tone to it; the Reapers have invaded Earth and every human-colonized planet and it’s up to Shepard and his team to convince every alien race to band together to fight their common enemy. Players itching to finish Shepard and the Normandy crew’s tale absolutely cannot wait to take the fight to the reapers in single-player and in online co-op.

Here are our first thoughts on Mass Effect 3: Read the rest of this entry
